Iban Mayo Cleared, B Sample Negative
Oct 22nd, 2007 by Nick
Spanish Cycling star, Iban Mayo has had a tough past few months. During the Tour de France he had an A sample come back positive for EPO. EPO is a banned substance in cycling as with most sports because it increases the number of red blood cells in your body which then leads to increased endurance. The whole time he had been saying that it was not true and to wait until the B test. To be honest, I thought this was just another cyclist trying to lie to everyone about his drug use. It seems that these cyclists are shocked that the A sample comes back positive and even more shocked when the B comes back positive. However, Mayo was telling the truth. His B sample did come back negative. There apparently was a mistake when they tested the A sample.
I always like Mayo. I was actually cheering for him to beat Armstrong in the Tour, he just never found the form for it. He was close but not consistent. I feel bad for him, not only because his name is now inked with Drug talk but because he was suspended without pay from his team. Thats about a quarter of his salary gone. Hopefully they will pay him back since it was the labs mistake and not his.
